Your patience with our attempt to accommodate the SAT testing yesterday was greatly appreciated. We know it was an unexpectedly long day but we hope it was worth it and we thank you for your support!

All competing dancers get a vote to decide which charity (Levine Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, or Girls on the Run) receives the proceeds from this competition.

Mark has been with us for years, Tessa and Kelly are returning for their second year and we welcome Patrick Bush who comes to us from Ohio with 10 years of experience. We are thrilled they have joined our crew!

The venue will be the Blake Hotel once again, with one of the largest meeting spaces in the city.

Rooms will be available at a rate of $91 (only $2 more than last year and still less than 2009 rates, and significantly cheaper than other uptown hotels) Reservations must be made by calling (704) 372-4100 between 10am and 7pm, Monday through Friday, and referencing Feile Rince Charlotte. The rate is available until 5/15/10. If you have any problems making your reservation, please let me know so that I can make sure the process runs smoothly.

I am hoping to have the same caterer return to offer breakfast, lunch and snacks on Saturday since the hotel restaurant seems to be gone for good. Will keep you posted.

A huge and sincere thank you to all of the WKS families that volunteered their time and energy this weekend and well before. The feis runs solely on volunteer power, and I know it is hard to sometimes give up a Saturday or give up the chance to see your own child dance in order to post awards, or run a stage, or help out in tabulation. Your feis-chairs truly appreciate the hard work everyone put in, and the great attitude that everyone took whenever we loaded on more work ;-)

I especially appreciate those people who really stepped up to help me out in particular, so a special thanks to Aine, Cathy, Jeanne, Lisa, and Michelle. And well, I can never thank Julie enough for being the best co-chair one could ever ask for, so in gratitude, I will just help her to come up with an excuse to get out of doing this again next year!

Please note that although there will be food concessions for breakfast and lunch on Saturday, the hotel restaurant is closed for remodeling so there will be no food available at the Blake Friday or Saturday evening except what is offered in the lobby snackbar. The hotel can provide information for guests on local delivery options.

Because of the concessions available on Saturday, no large coolers will be allowed in the public meeting/ballroom spaces of the hotel.

The schedule is not quite ready yet (still dealing with splits), but should be online tomorrow (Wednesday) at some point. I am away for a funeral so I may not be able to get it posted until Thursday, so my apologies if that happens.

Like most years, we are running figures first, then will start beginner and advanced beginner on 4 stages, specials on one stage, and championship on the last. We will run Prelims first, starting with the youngest age groups.

Hope that helps at least a little with everyone's planning. Please remember that no statements about the schedule are final or unchangeable until I actually post the schedule, and even then, there may be small changes for feis day.

Many thanks to all of the Walsh-Kelly parents who have already signed up to volunteer at this year's feis. For those who haven't yet, please contact Julie to figure out where she still needs help. All feiseanna that your children attend are run by volunteers, so this is your chance to give something back by helping to make our feis a success. We need EVERYONE!

Also, remember WORK NIGHT is Wednesday June 2. We need lots of help just getting all the registration materials, t-shirts, programs, and stage books put together. It is at the studio, and all parents are welcome. It tends to be a fun few hours meeting and hanging out with other dance parents. Also a great chance for "newer" parents to gab with more experienced feis parents!

Hotel feis rate

The deadline for the feis rate has now passed. The hotel may still be offering deals on a limited basis online (one day it's $129, the next $80...you just have to get lucky). If you do book online, could you please let me know so that they feis can get "credit" for your room to apply to our required commitment of rooms booked. We don't get any kickback or anything like that, but if we don't meet our required commitment, we have to pay out the nose.

2010 Schedule

As can be expected, I am making NO promises about the schedule. Anything I might suggest or imply or outright state about the schedule is open for change up until I publish the official schedule (and even then there may be a little variation before feis day).

That said, I am expecting that the schedule will be similar to last year. Meaning figures and adults starting at 8am, and then immediately starting Beg and Adv Beg on four stages, champs on one stage, and then finally Nov/Prizewinner specials on another with PC non-trads in there somewhere. The main question that is still undecided is whether to run PC or OC first, and whether to start with young or old. And I won't make that decision til I sit down to actually make the schedule about a week before the feis. There are lots of factors involved, especially musician schedules to make sure we have someone to play all those champ sets.

I will keep you updated as decisions are made!

Combined age groups

I've received some inquiries about combined age groups. Some of you have noticed that especially in the novice and prizewinner ages 10-13, we have combined age groups (as allowed under NAFC and IDTANA rules and syllabi). This is a fairly standard practice, but in the past, we have planned on having plenty of dancers in certain age groups to offer single year age groups. Assuming the combined groups mentioned above are anywhere near as large as they were last year, we will be splitting them back out into single age groups once we get closer to the feis. It is hard to know each year if those same age groups will remain big, or if there is a bubble group of dancers who are moving through the age groups. We also can't predict if dancers have been feising enough this year in this economy to move up levels, etc. I just felt that this year was a little less predictable than prior years, so tried to give us some flexibility. I cannot say at this moment at what number we will split (it will be 30 or below, for sure).

NAFC and IDTANA have rules governing how much we can combine and when, so I wanted to make sure we did everything within our power to make sure that we have the minimum of 5 dancers required for dancers to be eligible to use their placement for moving up.

T-shirts 2010

For those of you who have been to FRC in the past, you probably know that we only sell t-shirts as pre-orders. Each year, our designer creates a fabulous new and original design. Shirts have always been in, shall we say, gender-neutral colors (in other words, don't think we have ever had a pink shirt). As soon as the design in complete, I will post here for everyone to see.

Just remember to include your order with your efeis registration.

We expect to need to split some large novice and prizewinner competitions, and we will merge to the extent that we are allowed under IDTANA and NAFC rules to meet the 5 dancer minimums for moving up. These decisions will be made later, once we get a better sense of our numbers.

I expect the schedule to be similar to last year, but no guarantees! So for new attendees, this means that I expect figures to be first thing in the morning at 8am, followed by Beg/Adv Beg on four stages, and then champions starting as well on two stages. In other words, EVERYONE has to wake up early! Music competitions will be held Friday evening and judged by Mark Arrington.

The delicious caterer will be back, and so far we have a great set of vendors selling everything you could need or want.

Our musicians are Billy Furlong, Mark Arrington, Kelly Winter and Tessa Thistlewaithe. I will post the judges names once all are confirmed.

We are at the Blake Hotel again, located at 555 S McDowell Street in uptown Charlotte. Reservations should be made directly with The Blake Hotel 1-888-664-6835 or 704-372-4100 (from 10am 'til 7pm). Refer to Group 1012. Feis rate is $89/night and is available until May 15, 2010.

We are hoping to open Feile Rince Charlotte for registration on eFeis by April 1. I will post a printable copy of the syllabus online in the next few days.

The date is set for June 5, 2010. Once again we will be at the Blake hotel, with a great new rate for the coming year, $89 if you use Group #1012. We will also have our two long-standing musicians returning, Billy Furlong and Mark Arrington, as well as our new addition from last year Jim Butke. We hope to have our syllabus ready to go early in the new year.
